Can You Get Vaccinated in Virtual Reality?
In all of the Netherlands, efforts are being made to get as many people vaccinated as possible. But what do you do when there is "needle fear"? Virtual reality can be a great tool to encourage these individuals to get vaccinated!
Virtual Reality Pop-Up Vaccination Site
At the Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, the first Dutch virtual reality pop-up vaccination site has been set up. People can get vaccinated here without an appointment. What's unique about this vaccination site is that Erasmus MC employs a virtual reality headset during the vaccination. This is particularly useful for people who experience needle fear. With the virtual reality headset on, you swim among dolphins or walk in the Maldives. This distracts all attention from the vaccination and allows for a worry-free vaccination to be administered.
People imagine themselves in the Maldives or swimming among dolphins while the vaccine is administered.
Pico G2 4K
A Pico G2 4K is used for this application. This is a so-called 3 DOF VR headset. With this VR headset, it is possible to play a 360-degree video. The person wearing the VR headset then feels as if they are in the middle of the virtual world.

Difference between 3 DOF and 6 DOF Headsets
A 3 DOF VR headset is different from a 6 DOF VR headset. The main difference between these headsets is that with a 3 DOF VR headset, you can only look statically at a screen. With a 6 DOF VR headset, it is possible to interact with the environment. Therefore, a 3 DOF VR headset is often characterized by a pre-recorded video made with a 360-degree camera, whereas with a 6 DOF VR headset, you find yourself more in a virtual environment (like a video game).
