Realism
Virtual reality is characterized by its realism. Years ago, before virtual reality was known, people dreamed of being transported into a video game. As the years passed, games became more and more realistic (think Battlefield and Call of Duty), but they remained games that you played behind a screen. Nowadays, virtual reality has progressed so much that you can literally transport yourself into the virtual world. The next step in this process seems to be the addition of realistic subjects and haptic feedback. Because immersing yourself completely in VR is not just about your sight, it also needs to feel like you're in the virtual world!
Haptic feedback
Fortunately, as of 2020, there are a lot of ways to make your virtual reality experience even more realistic. One of these ways is the addition of a haptic vest. But another really cool accessory is the addition of a virtual reality gun (VR gun case or a VR gun controller). A virtual reality gun is a gun that you add to a VR game in combination with your controllers or a Vive tracker. This way, instead of two physical controllers, you suddenly have a realistic firearm in your hands! VR guns distinguish themselves mainly in terms of realism. Relatively simple VR guns like the Hyper Blaster can be found for less than €90, while more realistic guns can quickly go up to €500 or even thousands.
Haptic vs. Non-Haptic
A haptic VR gun is a gun that operates based on an HTC Vive tracker. This gun has a sensor that provides feedback when you shoot in a game. Haptic guns thus also provide the most realistic experience! Defense, police, and governments also use haptic guns a lot for training. For example, you can test a new weapon or train certain attack techniques with a haptic gun. For more information about VR in police, defense & government, you can also this blog take a look.
We refer to a non-haptic gun when it is a virtual reality gun without feedback. In a non-haptic gun, also called a VR gun case, you place the controllers of your VR set in the designated places and the controllers are transformed into a VR gun. With VR gun cases, there is a big difference in quality (and therefore price). The simple and cheaper VR gun cases are just holders for your VR controllers to keep them in place of a gun, while the more expensive VR gun cases are more focused on realism and comfort.
The Best VR Guns Highlighted
Our favorite VR gun at the moment is the M4 VR Gun Case for HTC Vive and Vive Pro Controllers. This VR gun case allows you to pull your front VR controller off with a magnet, so you can also use two hands in a VR game. This is especially handy in games like VRZ: Torment, where you occasionally switch weapons and don't run around with a two-handed automatic gun the whole game. In addition, the case feels very solid and gives a good feeling of a realistic firearm.

Tracking recognition
For the real work, we recommend using a haptic VR gun. The ScarVR 2.0 Haptic Feedback VR Gun is currently one of the most realistic and cool-looking haptic guns on the market. This haptic gun works based on an HTC Vive Tracker 2.0. Through built-in cables, you can attach the Vive tracker to the gun and it automatically connects to SteamVR. The VR game recognizes the tracker on the gun as a controller and so you can use the VR gun in a game. Note that a haptic VR gun with Vive tracker requires a bit more technical knowledge than a VR gun case. Therefore, it is recommended to use a Haptic VR Gun only if you have knowledge of VR development or previous experience with an HTC Vive Tracker.
Looking for something more compact? Then the KAT VR Hand Gun Case for HTC Vive & Vive Pro is a really fun option. This is a VR gun case in the shape of a handgun. This case is particularly good for games where you play with a single pistol, like Pistol Whip. Due to the relatively low price, this is a really fun accessory to add to your VR experience!
