Predictions
Apple aims to launch its first augmented reality (AR) headset in the second quarter of 2022, according to a new research note from analyst Ming-Chi Kuo (often regarded as the most reliable Apple analyst at the moment).
We predict that Apple will launch HMD devices [head-mounted display] in 2022. The device will offer a transparent AR experience, so the lens is also needed, and Genius is a key supplier here.
The research report focuses on the prospects for key Apple supplier Genius Electronic Optical, noting that the company will co-produce a number of upcoming VR and AR products from the likes of Facebook, Sony, and Apple.
Rumors suggest that Apple is working on various models of AR-related headsets, led by an initial augmented reality headset. It is not yet known whether this will be launched this year [2021] or next year [2022]. The rumor has it that a slimmer pair of augmented reality glasses will follow, perhaps around 2025.
As early as January, Kuo predicted that Apple's first AR headset would debut sometime in 2021, but by March he had pushed his prediction back to "mid-2022" - which is more in line with the new report.

Hefty price tag
So far, the first AR headset seems like something we have not seen before. The design at first glance resembles ski goggles. With a pair of large lenses at the front and a soft headband, the device appears to seal well around the eyes. The headset promises 'an immersive experience that is better than that of existing XR products'.
However, the new Apple AR headset does come with a hefty price tag. Rumors suggest that the new glasses will cost around 3000 dollars. With this, the glasses do not seem to directly compete with Oculus or HTC - but rather encroach on Microsoft's territory [HoloLens 2].
We are curious about what Apple will bring in the near future. One thing seems certain: Apple is setting its sights on VR/AR.
